“Jean Claude Ades was born and raised in Italy, is residing in Munich, and a fixture in Ibiza. Though he started as a pianist, at heart he is a producer, DJ and remixer. After learning the piano from scratch, he went the way of the synthesizer, keyboards, and computer, all the way to producer. The 32-year old has been underway for the last ten years.
So first of where does the music come from for you and how did you get inspired to be in this business? Well I started really early, I started as a musician, as a piano player when I was six years old and after a while I became really pasionned for electronics, synthesizers and computers, so when I was 18, 19 I bought my first computer and played with my sampler when I was 20 and from that time I started making music and I had my first release in 94' with Virgin Records. It was an early begining, this track was called „The Color Of My Style“ which was the first record and already like a big hit you know. But that was a long time ago (smijeh...) and then I started djing after, I started with producing first and slowly with time I moved on to djing. How would you describe yor musical style and what makes you special as a dj? Hmm tough one...I mean I have my favorite tunes but it's really hard to tell for me what kind of music I play. It's a fusion of house, electronic elements, it's not really straight old school house beacuse music is changing all the time, it's like a wawe you know. So you go with the wawe, some people are missing the wawe and some people are running behind the wawe but when you get on the wawe at the right time and you just try something new what's really important for me is always to try something new, but I like the fusion of electronic music and classical house beats, the uplifting and very energeticand powerfull... So where has your music taken you recently? A few monts ago I've been inChina which was MTV Heineken Tour...it was really amazing. Big crowds? Yeah yeah big crowds (smijeh...) We played on the first official outdoor event since five years ago on Hong Kong and they invited like about 5000 people on a private island and there was really, really amazing. I played there like six hours and the people were going insane. So that was like my bigest gig lately, otherwise I play in Europe...it's great stuff of course but you remember the biggest parties (smijeh...) Is there anything that you hate about your job, what about the travelling? Yeah the travelling of course...for the week I'm producing, I run my own label called Swings Records but on the weekends I'm always travelling, moving...Friday, Satuday most of the time and I come back on Sunday a little bit exhasted from the weekend and I ahve to recharge my batteries on Sunday, Monday... Tuesday? No Tuesday no (smijeh...) but I'm trying to party less. Really? Well not less but you know what I mean (smijeh...) If you play twice or three nights in a week you have to choose the right parties to really freak out. So it's really hard to say ok I dont drink, I go early home beacuse once you have the right energy you dont wanna go, you just keep going on and on, but yeah I still have enough energy so I go back on Monday, I go back to the studio, I do production, do remixes and so that's it (smijeh...) What's big at the moment on the house & electronic scene in Germany? Hmm it's very, very exciting at the moment beacuse I think house music...well we have a fusion of styles, before we were more in to funky & disco house and we had a really deep and minimal electronic sound, but I think now everything is possible and it's cool beacuse it's very open and we can thank internet for it beacuse people get music really quick and they can get everything faster and inform themselves better, than go just to the record store and look at playlists from other dj's and say I want that and that. So today it's much more open beacuse you have musch more information and I think it's a fusion, music has to sound global you know. For me it's not...I hate everything that sounds like, you know. It has to fit but it has to be something new, something fresher, something pumping. Even the dj set has to be...it doesnt matter you can start with playing house, uplifting house and go more to electro and come back to house. I ahte when the whole night sounds the same, you hae to work the crowd out and let them feel youre with them and youre trying to make them happy and not like playing your ego. What music are you making now? Well I got a gew new releases set for the summerand I just dropped a record, it's on Swings Rec. my own label, called Swings EP with three different tracks. One with the old Nina Simone sample called „Feeling You“ and another track called „Movie World“ which is a really shuffle electronic tune and another one caled „Help Me“ which is a really uplifting housey electronic track, that's my new thing. I've done Disco To Disco. You remeber from disco to disco, yeah (smijeh...) and I'm releasing this track again with new mixes on my label. It's comig out in six weeks. Also with my mix, Mike Monday remix and I've done Wonderland Avenue „White Horse“. We done it and it's out now in the UK. I've done a remix for Sharam Jay, who is a good friend of mine, for „Let's Get It On“ an old track, he just re-released it. Hmm what else, yeah Somebody is coming out also again with new remixes and „Fly Away“ is coming out again. You dont know this record, neither does D&G know about this record (smijeh...) It's coming out for Ministry Of Sound in Germany. So what would you consider yourself as a dj or producer at heart? As both (smijeh...) I need to dj to be a good producer beacuse you feel the crowd especially beacuse I produce everyhing by myself, I dont have engineers or other people in the studio sitting for me there and working on the tracks. So I produce everything, I arrange, I mix...and so I need the weekends to feel the vibe, to come back home. So what about your new album, it's scheduled for the begining of 2006, right? Yeah that was planned but were just waiting for several releases, for example the new track “Fly Away“ beacuse they are signed to big major companies, so when you get major you have a video and much more like comercial present on the market. So I'm going to release the albumnot before September or October. It's gonna be like a electronic, housey album. As well as your djing in 2005 you started your own label „Swings Records“. Can you tell me abut that and how is it going now? Any sucess? Well I started with Swings Rec. as an idea for me, for myself as a platform for my own productions. I found a very good team of very professional people who were working in the major industry before and I put them together and they are doing a very good job, but I started to drop first my own records as a free platform beacuse I didnt want to work with major companies for new music, beacuse they dont understand new music in the early begining. They understand music just when it's a hit already. So you have to get them by the balls (smijeh...) So I started my label, first of all just for me but now slowly I'm getting more artists and people who are sending me stuff and asking me would you like to release this track. So I got a few new names, really great who wil be out this summer. Do you have the feeling you got more freedom working indenpendently now with your own label than u used to have in the past? Yeah of course . I've been signed by Warner for seven years and as an artist, as a producer I was always free and working for differentcompanies, but for myself I think, I've got maximum freedom I can ahve in this business, cos I play where I wanna play, I produce what I feel to produce and for me that's the biggest step or the biggest limit you can get to in the music business. Do you think house music can progress any further than it has in the last 15 years and what's your opinion on the whole digital revolution and is it going to change the way you perform? Well I dont spin vinyls any more and I think vinyl is going to die soon. Five years ago everyone said vinyl wont die but I'm always going with the time and I'm looking forward to see the revolution and I think humans always go for the easy way and today if I ahve a gig in China and I feel like, ok I wanna play this new record I dont have to go to the record shop, I go to djdownload and I download the rnd new stuff and I can play it the same night and I dont have to carry so manyrecords with me any more. Also to play with the Pioneer cd players, it's much more creative, if I feel like I want to loop a track on the right moment I can do it, I can do my own braek, like for two minutes if I feel like the crowd needs a break. I can filter stuff and that was not possible before so I think its the same with productions, the new tehnology gives you much more freedom or much more chances to change the sound and that's what makes music sound different from before. I mean I work totally digital, before I was an analogic freak (smijeh..) I ahd a big studio with tons of equipment and now I got a big computer and that's it. I enjoy it beacuse it's a different way to work but I love the sound, I think it's amazing and now it's just virtual. I'm on tour I can take my laptop, I can dopreproduction and that makes you feel really free beacuse once you have an idea you just open up your laptop, you do your beats, your stuff. Write a melody and come home and do final production and I love it, everything became faster and every record is coming out and it's out there really quick. The world is becoming faster in every business. What about this years WMC in Miami, have you been there this year? No, I stayed here, first of all I saved my energy beacuse there's not much happening there beacuse all the contacts I have I see them anyway, it's just about a holiday and a party week. So I save my energy, I didnt go there beacuse as I told you with the internet you dont need to be at a specific place, you have your contacts, you send your stuff. Ok it's sometimes good to have a personal relationship, you see people but when I go to Ibiza at summer I see them again. I dont need to go to Miami and I dont need to have a ten hour flight to see them. I see them in Ibiza and I just have to fly two hours! (smijeh...) So what about this summer, do you have any plans for returning back here or on the coast? It depends if they like my music tonight, maybe they are gonna bok me for another party. I can not promise (smjeh...) Let's see what I can do tonight. Any other plans, maybe a trip to Ibiza? Ooh yeah I lived in Ibiza so I done, I produced a few hits when I was there, so that was a very creative moment, but now I just go there for pleasure not for work, of course I go there to play but for me it's always a pleasure, it's like my second home so I enjoy it but it's to crazy to live there for a longer time (smijeh...) So I'm gonna leave you to say, to add a couple of words to all the readers, so go ahead... So I can say so much but as I just arrived here today and I love, love Zagreb, I love the club, the people, I see beautifull girls here and I acn tell you much more tomorrow when I get home totally drunk and satisfied beacuse I think It's gonna be a fantastic night tonight and I hope to see you soon again in Hacienda. So have a good time, stay tuned and see you soon! Bye!
