When I asked him the perennial question journalists ask DJ’s about their style, Hector Romero replied: “I play the best of all genres of dance music.” Quite the dibs, but Hector’s got the credentials to back it up. 2006 begins with Hector Romero ’s first international mix CD release, “Pacha Winter Sessions”.
Q: How did it come about that, that you were asked to mix a CD for Pacha? Last summer Def Mix completed it’s 5th year of holding residency at Pacha, Ibiza. Danny Whittle the director there thought it was time for me to sort of shine on one of their famous Pacha series. I was flattered and appreciated it very much. Q: Tell us about the tracks you have chosen for the CD and why? Any standout tracks or hot new talent that we should look out for? Since I play a variety of styles of house music I set out to pick a couple of the best tracks available at the time. A few vocals, a few tracks a few electro tunes and mixed them up – I was happy with the tracks that were available to me and at the end I was pretty happy with the outcome. It’s hard when you’re limited to 80 minutes but you have to make it happen and fit it all in. Q: You’ve played at Pacha for the Defmix parties in Ibiza for many years now. Did you use your experience of playing at Pacha when choosing the tracks for the CD? To some extent I kept the Pacha feel in the mix. To be honest I play the same at Pacha as I would play in say Italy – I never change styles to cater to countries or venues. Promoters hire me for what I’m known for and I love that about my job. Q: Have you played at any other of the Pacha venues around the world? Which is your favourite? On NYE 2005 I played at Pacha Marrakech and I must say that was the most beautiful Pacha venues of them all. The one in Portugal is lovely as well and of course Pacha Ibiza is unique but the one in Marrakech is one of the best I’ve seen. Pacha Ibiza is my favorite to play in. Q: You’re part of the world famous Defmix crew, how long have you been part of Defmix? I’ve been with Def Mix for 10 years now. I’ve practically grown up here – I’ve learned a lot from Judy Weinstein that helps me with my business side of my carreer and I’ve taken influences from each of the boys - Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Satoshi Tomiie are like family to me. Q: For those just discovering you, how would you describe your sound? My sound is eclectic – I play a little of every style of house music and put all together as best as I can. Funky is always the undertone to my style as well. Q: Have you played in Croatia before? Never played Croatia but I do know that I'm in for a treat. Morales is a big fan of Croatia and I've heard amazing stories - so I'm ready! Q: What do you think about the scene in Croatia? I have heard a lot about the scene in Eastern Europe and that the crowds are really up for it, so I am looking forward to playing and finding out more.
