Born in 1973, Gwen grew up in La Baule, a place made famous for having the biggest beach in Europe and trendy hangouts on the West Coast of France. He almost felt in love with music at his tenderest age ; the latest being more than a mere pleasure for him, as the symbol of life and harmony between beigns.
Where does the music come from for you and how did you get inspired to be in this business? Ooh I think it's my passion for the music. I listen to all of the music, all styles. Since I was little I was listening music together with my brother and after I started with my djing in this little club in France. After I went to Luxemburg and I listened to all of the house music in New York and that's my favorite influence, for example MAW, Mood 2 Swing, Kings Of Tomorrow, Carl Craig... I love all the music jazz, soul, brazilian music and it's interesting for me to play all this tracks. Where has your music taken you recently? I play all the weekends, all the time...I have one residency in France, the club is Le Carrousel it's in Nantes and I play for the TGV parties at Maxim's, Paris with DJ Gregory, Bob Sinclair, Martin Solveig and sometimes I play in England, London or Leeds at Hard Times, Manchester, Barcelona...it's my life (smijeh..) Is there anything that you hate about your job? What about the traveling? No it's cool, it's simple I like my job...it's cool for the money, you get to travel all over Europe. It's not a dream job but it's really interesting. What's big at the moment on the electronic & house scene in France and in what way is it diffrent from the rest of the Europe? In Europe I think for the moment the soulfull house is really interesting. It's more electronic now. Carl Craig is the man and I really like Carl Craig (smijeh...) I think all the producers in the future will make more tracks with electronic vibes. I think that's really interesting. So would you consider yourself as a dj or a producer? Well I'm not a good producer at the moment. I'm not a talent like Carl Craig, Gregory or Martin...for me it's just a game, for the moment it's just a game but who knows what will happen in the future (smijeh...) Can you tell me about one of your tracks „ Soul Conga“ on Yellow Productions, which later was licensed for Bob Sinlairs Africanism. Aha with Soul Conga there's a little history beacuse Martin Solveig is one of my best friends, I went to school with Martin and he spoke with me after many many glasses of vodka (smijeh...) and he said: „Yeah Gwen what are you doing? It's time to take one track for Africanism“ So i said ok, it's ok... so I went to my studio and ten minutes after I made Soul Conga, just in ten minutes (smijeh...) and after one week it was finished. After that Bob Sinclair took the track for Yellow Productions and Africanism, all the dj's played this track...Kerry Chandler, Solveig, Gregory, DJ Deep and Simon Dunmore from Defected took the track for one listen and it was ok for In The House series. And this moment I'm working on many tracks and I'm in contact with Defected for the future. Do you think house music can progress any further than in has in the last 15 years? I think house music...this is my opinion...but I think it's finished beacuse Daft Punk, Gregory, Solveig...hmm the house is not finished but now it's always the same. For me one of the best producers is Gregory, beacuse he is an inovator and after it's important for all of the producers and dj's, like Martin, Sinclair, Julian Jabre...that's a little family in France. What's your opinion on the whole digital revolution and is it going to change the way you perform as a dj? I think that's not a really revolution for the music. It's always the same music, it always was. Now it's just the format which changed, that's the only difference. But sometimes when you play in many clubs you play on cd's, mp3 or vinyl. It's the same music, it's your..it's my choice and it's so simple now with the cd's but it's the work of the dj which is important, to mix it all in. So do you prefer playing on vinyl or cd's? It's not the same work. With the cd's you want to make many loops. It's a new work...and tonight at Gallery I saw four cd players so it's intresting to mix on them. So aside your djing you also have a radio show, so can you tell me about that, is this reflective to your dj sets? Ooh it's different (smijeh...) beacuse my radio show is on www.vmix.fr and it's on Tuesdays at 8 o'clock and when I play in clubs I play for all the people and I dont play deep house for example...so it's a big club, it's not possible. So what can we expect when we come and see you? Hehe I dont know...I play with felings, I play all my favorite songs at this moment. I try to feel the crowd, what they like and what moves them on the dancefloor. You played on Karl Lagerfeld's TGV parties in Paris and the Chanel fashion showes...so are you moving on to a fashion scene in the future? Well I play for Chanel in Paris, it's a party with Sylvie Chateigner, the best friend of Karl Lagerfeld. So that's really cool...I played there with Gregory, DJ Yellow, Bob Sinclair... So what are your plans & ambitions for the future? I wait for the moment, you can say I'm on stand by (smijeh...) cos' today it's not simple with the internet and the music industry...it's not simple and for the moment I prefer to wait. I'm working on many tracks and for the moment I'll just have to wait and see (smijeh...) With who would you like to do a collaboration with, you said youre a big fan of Carl Craig... I have signed to a new adress on the web, it's Myspace.com and it's similar to MSN but it's just for the music. And already I have about 40 friends, just in music, people like Kenny Dope, Carl Craig, Dennis Ferrer, Mr. V, Marcus Enochson...and in music there are so many connections so it's possible in the future...why not, it's a pleasure. Could you tell me a bit where your passions lie, not just in music but also outside of music? Hehe do you want to hear what my passion is...(smijeh..) I like to cooke, beacuse it's important for the life. I cooke all the day in my kitchen for me, for my girlfriend. So she is happy and me also, and I really often check out museums, all the expositions and I really like Serge Gainsburg (smijeh...) Well what about this summer, do you have any plans for returning back here or maybe on the coast? Ooh I'll think I'll come back this summer to Hacienda, so I hope to see everybody there again and of course have a great time like always!!
