Initially known as the pioneer of trance music, BT has evolved into one of the most visionary artists and producers for a multitude of musical styles. Whether composing intricate scores with 80-piece orchestras for blockbuster films and the Oscar-winning Monster, writing and producing for Sting, David Bowie, remixing evocative epics for Madonna or designing and creating cutting edge proprietary software tools from scratch to make it happen.
What are your thoughts about the Thirst Studio project? Why did you get involved? It’s an amazing way for new talent to be heard, and any way I can be a part of something like that, I am honored. Why did you choose Robert as winner of Thirst Studio in Croatia? What was different about Robert's production in relation to the other 2 Croatian finalists? The production was strong and I liked the thematic elements. It sounded hopeful, I enjoy that in music. Can you please tell as about the time you spent with Robert in the studio? What will the new track sound like? AMAZING. He’s a terrific guy, a quick learner, a great listener and a lot of fun to hang out and work with. The track is sounding ROCKING. The new version is more tecky/glitchy. What do you think this opportunity will bring to Robert? Not everyone gets a chance to record with You in the studio? It was amazing. It’s a real thrill to me to see such enthusiasm in the studio : ) Would you have entered Thirst Studio if such competition existed when you started your career? Absolutely. I wish I had such an amazing opportunity. Heineken is such a forward thinking company for embracing dance music culture in such a impactful way. Like I said, I am proud to be a part of it J Your career streches over a decade, so can you tell me about your history and how did you start out...it was in Maryland, USA right? What are your memories of the music scene that you grew up in? 15 years. There was no scene. Deep Dish, Jon Selway, and I all went to school together. We've all been friends for 20+ years. We made our own scene : ) Where does the music come from for you and how did you get inspired to be in this business? God Is there anything that you hate about your job, what about the constatnt traveling? Love it What's big at the moment on the electronic scene in America for you and in what way is it different from the rest of the Europe, Asia... I am all about the glitchy stuff. Minimal techno mixed with electro house. Yehaw!! Do you have any tips for us, what artist will make it...who has the potential but is not entirely there yet? Study, perfect your craft and instead of staying out all night clubbing, practice your instrument or polish your production chops. How did you & Deep Dish get started? Sold our cars and started our own record label. True story : ) What about your work on your own after Deep Dish? How was that different from what you were doing before? It wasn’t. My work has been in evolution since I began composing. I started playing piano (Suzuki method) at four and begain string writing and symphonic orchestration at 7. That is when I began to write. It’s been a long evolution since then. So what does this music say about you now? This Binary Universe is the record I am most proud of. It’s actually more like 7 short films. All written in 5.1. Three pieces with a 110 piece orchestra and featuring my drum machine I’ve been working on over the last 2 years for Sonik Architects my software company. It’s called break tweaker. The visual artists that contributed to this album are unreal. It’s a really special one. Check it out here Where has your music taken you recently? To the ends of the earth Do you think the whole electronic scene can evolve any further than it has in the last, lets say 15 years, and whats your opinion on the whole digital revolution and is it going to change the way dj’s and musicians perform? And what‘s your attitude to all of that? Art is becoming apart of the EM scene and that excited me greatly. It’s growing in a beautiful and evocative direction. Could you tell me a bit where your passions lie, not just in music but also outside of music? Spirituality, nature, parenting (my beautiful 2 year old daughter), and Boston Terrier and Pug rescue As well as your productions you also did some soundtracks and themes for a couple of blockbusters and series...for example The fast and the furious, and the Oscar-winning Monster to the Kevin Hill series...can you tell me about that and how did that happen? I love writing for an orchestra. And conducting is such a blast. I’ve scored a ton of films now and that’s what always keeps me coming back. Standing at the podium with a baton and 110 bad ass musicians. It’s the most amazing sound in the world, I feel so blessed to get to do that. You’ve had a chance to work with a lot of pretty phenomenal people in the business. Are there any other people you‘re itching to work with? Kronos String Quartet, and MissyE What would you consider yourself as a dj or producer at heart? I’d call myself a composer : ) Finally...you’ve got the whole package...hip-hop, nu-skool breaks, trance, progressive house...all the different genres within the genre. So whats next for you? This Binary Universe : ) Peace man!! B Interview by: Alen Spiler |
