Persistence, steadiness, and creativity are three virtues which are hard to find in any industry, especially in the German Dance-scene. Since his first single "I House You" from 1995 Munich's DJ and producer Tom Novy managed to grow in all directions with remarkable constancy. Novy created a unique and extremely danceable sound that ranged between House, Dance, and Funk. This process is evident on his debut album "My Definition" on which one hit follows the next. In the single "Welcome To The Race", recorded with singer Lima Ben-Jannett's energetic support, Tom Novy impressively demonstrates what league he is in. There is a reason that his songs have become more and more successful internationally as well. He has matured into quite a career artist/producer. Also as a DJ, he is presently in greater demand than ever, as his co-operation with the legendary English Dance-Label Ministry Of Sound clearly shows. Tom Novy was the first German DJ to do a mix of the "Annual" compilation together with Boy George, and they took the charts in England and Germany by storm at the end of 2000. Tom's single "Pumpin", recorded together with Eniac scored a number 19 in the English charts in June 2000. This was a good year for remixes as well, working with such luminaries as Tom Jones & Mousse T. ("Sexbomb"), Lou Bega ("Mambo #5"), and Eddie Amador ("Rise"), which added to his international reputation. "On my first album it was important for me to show all my skills without losing myself in trivialities" Tom Novy states unambiguously. I see myself as a music-producer, not as a band. That's also why I work together with different singers (Virginia, Lima) and producers (Eniac, Oliver Morgenroth, Adrian Misievicz). The rich experience Tom Novy was able to gather in his numerous appearances as a DJ during the last 15 years, make for another bonus. He has become a very well rounded, versatile artist/producer/DJ. "DJing around the world definitely has an effect on my work as a producer too. You simply become more open stylistically." His Tracks "Smoke Dis" or "Pumpin ´", in which he combines elements of HipHop, Acid, and Breakbeat in a very unconventional, way back up this statement. Tom is influenced by Pop culture and the fusion of genres in music. “It opens the boundaries in music. This is what evolution is all about.” Tracks like "Now or Never", or "Minha Vida", a nine minutes long Samba hymn easily floating with a Mediterranean swing, once again show his ability to adapt to different musical styles. Still these songs represent only a small selection of his stylistic spectrum. Tom's music is always evolving…always getting better. Even though House with all its varieties is clearly predominant for the most part of Tom Novy's work, he has become far more than an average Dance-producer. His musical vision on "My Definition“, Tom's first album released in 2000- reaching from hits like "Superstar", one of his most successful singles ever, to chart-busters like "Get Down With the Funk" - definitely doesn't run out as quickly. “Superstar” has officially been named one of the 10 biggest songs in dance music history (Raveline -2005) Funkiness is really the term to describe Tom Novy's music at the moment.
"Musically I've always been walking along borderlines, not willing to settle for one certain style" says Tom. "I started my DJ-career with HipHop. Then, at the beginning of the 90s, I discovered Techno. Presently, House is my passion. Even today I'd love to combine all kinds of different styles in my sets but that's become almost impossible because people always expect one certain sound from me. Unfortunately, thinking in rather narrow categories has definitely become more popular. Many people refuse to combine things even though Hip Hop, House, and also Techno have far more in common than it may first appear. The globalisation has reached a state at which it doesn't really matter anymore whether you're playing in New York, Amsterdam or Tokyo. You almost always meet the kind of people whose first priority is to have fun." 2005 has once again brought a new twist to Tom's career. “Your Body”, a track previously released in Germany in 2004 on vinyl only, was picked up by the hottest DJ in Australia, Andy Van, and soon shot to #1 on the ARIAN (Australian) charts (released on MOS Australia). “Your Body” saw the same success in South Africa (released on , holding on to the top 5 for 12 weeks in a row. Ministry of Sound in the UK and Ultra Records in the US, will release the track in late November 2005. Additional labels have released the track around Europe and it has become one of the hottest tracks of the summer! Pete Tong has added “Your Body” to his Essential Selection radio show on Radio One and Tom will guest DJ with Tong live in Ibiza at the end of September.
To build on this momentum, Tom will travel to Australia in October for a 6 city tour to promote this massive record. With an album complete, and a booking schedule filled to the max, there is a lot to look forward to. Tom's newest single “Take It” entered the German sales charts at #35 and peaked at #5 on the German Dance Charts. It is a great start to his new record and as it is being licensed around the world, it seems Tom's career, nationally and internationally, is only going to get better.
